Once behind the wheel, drivers are treated to a digital instrument cluster that has 10.25-inch display which is augmented by a next-generation heads up display.

Motivation is provided by a plug-in hybrid powertrain which features a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. It produces a combined output of more than 190 PS (140 kW / 187 hp) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than eight seconds, hit a top speed of approximately 200 km/h (124 mph) and travel more than 30 km (18.6 miles) on electricity alone.

Cadillac has been mum on details, but previously confirmed the ELR will have a Voltec powertrain that consists of a "T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit and a four-cylinder engine-generator." That's the same basic setup as the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera, but the ELR is expected to have a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor.

It has the same wheelbase and platform as the five-door model but comes with a lower stance as it is 0.4 inches closer to the road, while its roof is sitting 1.7 inches lower compared to the Countryman. In addition, the new model is 44 pounds (20 kg) lighter and comes as standard with the ALL4.

The car is equipped with a driver profile selection system that has five different modes: Eco, Sport, Normal, Individual and Comfort (only on models equipped with the adaptive chassis control system). In Eco mode, the air conditioner and other ancillary systems are optimized to reduce fuel consumption.

At launch, options include:

• A 1.2-liter TSI with 85 PS (63 kW) that consumes 4.9 L/100km and has CO2 emissions of 113 g/km
• A 1.4-liter TSI with cylinder-deactivation technology that produces 140 PS (103 kW) and consumes 4.9 L/100 km with CO2 emissions of 112 g/km 
• A 105 PS (77 kW) TDI that consumes 3.8 L/100km and has CO2 emissions of 99 g/km
• A 150 PS (110 kW) TDI that consumes 4.1 L/100km and has CO2 emissions of 106 g/km
